Exotic looking ferns for my garden

Who hasn't dreamed in front of the beauty of a tree fern in a botanical garden or in front of a magnificent composition in a Japanese garden. This decoration is possible in your home thanks to the use of fern with an exotic look!

Woodwardia unigemmata

Woodwardia unigemmata is native to East Asia where it grows in the mountains, yet its appearance inspires the tropical forests of the world. Spectacular, its large, sharply cut, green fronds are enamelled with reddish young shoots that add to its beauty. This fern is hardy down to -8°C if you mulch your feet well. Its subterranean roots spread easily, ensuring a generous expansion of the plant.

Dryopteris cycadina

Dryopteris cycadina appreciates cool, acidic soils and shady exposures. Very hardy it can be grown in most regions as it is native to the mountains of China and Japan. Erected, of a beautiful brilliant green, this fern can reach 70 cm of development in all directions. It is ideal in shady areas to which it will give a note of exoticism.

Cyrtomium falcatum

Cyrtomium falcatum is a fern that is easy to grow in all types of soil. Its beautiful, tough, dark, glossy green foliage with pointed leaflets and petioles covered with scales will intrigue amateurs. With about 60 of development in all directions, it perfectly decorates gardens with a Japanese tendency in the company of other plants evocative of this faraway land. Quite hardy, it tolerates up to -7°C if its foot is copiously strawed. In cooler regions, replace it by more robust and hardy Cyrtomium fortunei, with beautiful matte light green foliage. This species can reach 70 cm in all directions.

Adiantum pedatum

Adiantum pedatum (better known as 'Capillary') is a very graphic fern with delicately cut light green foliage, turning blue-green with time. Its fronds spread out horizontally and its original port make of it a very ornamental plant which can accompany a parterre of hostas, heuchères or azaleas in a shaded oriental garden. This magnificent fern is also very hardy since it can survive temperatures of -15°C.

Lygodium japonicum

Lygodium japonicum is the plant which you need if you like originality. It is a climbing fern coming to us from Japan, Korea and Eastern Australia.  Of very fast growth, it can reach 30 meters in height with fronds of more than 2 m length. Its evergreen foliage is ideal to cover a fence or a pergola but only in a shady and cool area since it prefers temperatures between 10 and 15°C.

Dicksonia antartica

Dicksonia antartica more known under the name of 'Tree fern', can be planted in the ground in the mildest regions. Moderately hardy, it resists up to -7°C if well protected in winter. Very ornamental, it will make wonder in isolated subject in a shaded area of the garden. Carried by a stipe that can reach 3 m in height, the crown of bright green fronds, each 2.5 m long, will fascinate the most jaded gardeners.
