Create a flowery meadow

More and more in vogue, mixtures of flower seeds allow to create flowered meadows and to embellish at a lower cost large surfaces. The decorative effects obtained are superb and offer over the weeks a magnificent changing and natural spectacle.

It is necessary to pay great attention to the preparation of the soil and the sowing for a beautiful result, the main points are the following :
  • Make a good tillage with finely crumbled soil,
  • If the ground is invaded by weeds, carry out a false sowing, i.e. let the weeds germinate for about ten days, pull out the weeds, then sow the mixture after two to three days,
  • The sowing rates are low (2 to 4 grs per m²), which is difficult to achieve in practice. It is thus advisable to calculate the weight of seeds for the surface, then to sow in a mixture with sand, very fine compost, or sarazin pod. Sowing in excessive doses gives less good results,
  • Sow in warmed soil: ideally March to May depending on the region, or fall for some multi-year mixtures,
  • It is not necessary to water in general, except in case of drought and mainly at the time of sowing,
  • No fertilizer: this favors the growth and the pouring of the plants, to the detriment of the flowering,
  • At the end of autumn, pass the flowered meadow to the gyrocrusher to let the seeds resow naturally.
The mixtures of annuals reseed but the composition evolves and it is recommended to resow after two years or even every year. On the other hand, multiannual mixtures (hardy, field) composed of a mixture of annuals, biennials and perennials can be left in place for several seasons.

So-called "Japanese Turf" is actually a mixture of floral seeds and turf grasses. Of course, the lawn will only be mowed after the flowers have bloomed. Besides the beautiful effect of flowers floating on a meadow, the lawn will still look pleasant in winter.

Happy sowing to all!
