Climbing plants are ideal for creating real green curtains. They are perfect for providing intimate areas, well away from prying eyes, and also have the advantage of being less bulky than a traditional hedge.
Occulting yes, but how?
There are many ways to hide with plants. It all depends on the area to hide from view. The plantations can be made in limit of property simply by taking for support a fence, a low wall or panels out of wooden, canisse or plessis.
To create a green room inside a garden, a pergola, a kiosk or a trellis can be filled with climbing plants.
Around a swimming pool, it can be interesting to hide the opposite. Here again, plants will form ideal privacy screens.
On a balcony, a trellis can create a beautiful ornament on a partition, thus isolating you from the eyes of the neighbors. You can enjoy quiet sunbathing sessions and outdoor breakfasts in complete privacy.
Elements to take into account when creating a plant occultation
Climbing plants can be very vigorous. If you plan to plant a wisteria, for example, remember to use very solid supports because this plant forms a strong, twisted trunk over the years that can tear everything away.
Before choosing a plant on the spur of the moment, be sure to get the facts! Some plants have deciduous foliage and will not protect you from the eyes in winter. You will also have to collect the dead leaves in autumn, which unfortunately do not all fall at the same time! A lot of work ahead of you!
If you want to be protected by plants all year round, choose evergreen plants or mix plants at a rate of at least 1/3 evergreen leaves for 2/3 deciduous leaves.
Also pay attention to the hardiness of the plant. Formidable and colorful view screen in southern gardens, the bougainvillea will not resist to frost, just like the officinal jasmine. Always inquire beforehand about the origin of the coveted plant to get an idea of its hardiness.
Beware! Some plants produce fruits or berries that can stain the ground when they fall, which is very unpleasant near an entrance, on a balcony, or on the pavement of the swimming pool.
Which plants to hide with flowers?
Once is not customary, let's start with gardens located in privileged areas, where frost is almost non-existent. The officinal jasmine and its intoxicating perfume, the original pandorea, the bougainvillea or the bignone can be considered without worry.
Elsewhere, plant climbing hydrangeas, ivy, of which the multitude of cultivars makes it possible to vary the pleasures, honeysuckles, hops or clematis. The latter, whose many varieties ensure a staggered flowering over almost the whole year, go very well with climbing roses. Virginia creepers are very popular for their foliage, which turns flamboyant red in autumn. Here again, be sure to ask around, as there are unsuspected varieties that will not only protect you from prying eyes but will also be very original.
