With the first rains of September, the undergrowth exhales the scent of humus and rich earth, and the first mushroom caps unfold. It's time for long walks in the forest to take advantage of the newfound freshness. The garden should not be forgotten. Take advantage of autumn to fill yourself with more unusual, but no less delicious scents.
Flowers and foliage with intoxicating smells
Spice lovers will not be disappointed by installing a vitex, also known as monk's pepper. Vigorous and hardy, this shrub with blue flower spikes exhales a light peppery perfume, just like the perovskia which is part of the same botanical family and whose spicy scent is even more powerful when you brush against its foliage. In acidic soils and in regions with mild winters, try the myrtle, its perfume is incomparable after a shower.
Camelias sasanqua are the great stars of autumn, the beauty of their flowers being accentuated by the sweet scent of jasmine tea or even plums. Sweetness and a tender evocation of childhood, with the caramel tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), whose heart-shaped leaves change color in autumn and are dressed in a thousand lights, recalling the smell of the famous candy or even that of gingerbread.
Anyone who appreciates powerful, intoxicating scents should own an orange tree, the scent of its flowers warmed by the gentle autumn sun is simply unforgettable!
In the same category, let's not forget the jasmine that should be palisaded near a window or at the entrance of the house to fully enjoy its irresistible scent.
To create hedges very quickly, even on the seaside, think of Eleagnus. This amazing shrub will distil its powerful carnation scent from the very first frost. It is very amusing to observe the visitors of the garden, surprised by this strong scent, to look for its origin, and to be astonished that such obsolete flowers can exhale such a marvellous perfume.
To better enjoy the sweet scent
To take full advantage of the perfumes of your plants and taste these subtle sensations, place the plants with perfume within reach, along an alley, at the edge of the house, at the corner of the terrace, near the garden furniture... In all the areas where you pass often and where you like to linger.
Install a bench near a particularly fragrant subject, where you can rest or read a book while enjoying the flavors enhanced by the changing hours of the day. You will notice that each plant gives off a different scent depending on whether it is exposed to the midday sun, the morning dew, or the twilight mist.
In the same spirit, in order to take advantage of each scent individually, scatter your fragrant plants over the entire surface of the garden, in order to avoid the mixture of scents that could quickly prove to be destabilizing.
