In the collective unconscious, a garden worthy of the name must imperatively be structured, well cleaned; nature must be controlled, domesticated to the maximum. The consequence: the rarefaction of the local fauna and flora, which inevitably leads to imbalances and gradually causes the disappearance of an entire ecosystem...
Let's let nature take over
Even the most fastidious gardeners on the maintenance and the aesthetics of their garden, should let themselves go to the creation of a wasteland. By doing so, the local flora and fauna could gradually reorganize themselves, thus recreating an essential balance in the garden.
Goodbye constraining watering, treatments and various interventions! This place will have the advantage of being self-managing and attracting all the small animals useful to the garden that depend on "weeds" or weeds for their development.
The pollinating insects will be able to enjoy nectar free of phytosanitary products so dangerous for the environment. Each species of butterfly will be able to accomplish its successive phases of development on the plants dedicated to this purpose, ladybugs, hoverflies, bees, hedgehogs, birds, will find peace and will settle in the garden in a sustainable way.
The choice of the location
To create an overgrown garden, choose a place that is not very busy in the garden, where there will be very few interventions and passages, in order to ensure complete tranquility for the inhabitants of the place. Choose a sunny, well-ventilated place far enough from the house.
The realization of the wasteland
Nothing could be easier than to create a wasteland since it is a matter of not intervening on the chosen plot and letting nature take its course. Of course, the use of treatment products is to be avoided absolutely, as well as the pruning of dead flowers which could compromise future spontaneous sowing.
A natural garden corner imposes a total neglect in order to allow nature to regain its rights. Local plants adapted to the environment will gradually establish themselves and will not need any care to grow. For this reason, avoid sowing "ready-made" mixtures that are supposed to attract such and such species, which will not necessarily be adapted to your garden and to the local fauna.
Preliminary arrangements
Once the project of a plot left to nature is well defined, you can, before its creation, make some small arrangements in order to attract a maximum of animals and to fix them durably:
- The creation of a small watering place not far from there, will assure you of the presence of amphibians, numerous birds and insects hunting flies and mosquitoes like dragonflies;
- a few cut branches left under a hedge will allow animals to winter peacefully under cover;
- keeping small piles of dead leaves will encourage the presence and development of many small animals and micro organisms in the soil;
- Finally, you can install a house for insects near the wasteland, which will allow them to settle in permanently.
