10 drought-resistant shrubs

In regions where it rarely rains, it is interesting to grow shrubs, which once well established, will require very little water and will resist well in times of drought.

This will save you time, energy and money.

1- Althea


Althea thrives in all soils, even very poor ones, and is covered with large white, pink or purple flowers depending on the variety. It can be used in hedges if you keep its bushy aspect or as an isolated subject if it is pruned into a stem. In a bed, it will also find its place in the background.

2- Arbutus


Appreciated for the beauty of its bark and for its small round orange and edible fruits, the arbutus is an evergreen shrub with bright green foliage throughout the year. It appreciates well-drained, slightly acidic soil.

3- Perovskia


Its very ornamental silver foliage and its blue flower stalks make it a very ornamental subject in beds, flowerbeds or rock gardens. Very tolerant, the perovskia likes most soils, grows very fast and is resistant to most diseases and pests.

4- Eleagnus


Once well established, this shrub with its green/grayish foliage and sweet carnation-scented autumn blossoms needs no watering. Eleagnus can withstand sea spray, pollution and all types of soil. It is ideal for seaside hedges.

5- The laurel-tin


The laurel has the merit of flowering during the bad season. It is happy with all soils, even poor and rocky, and can withstand cold and drought. Numerous cultivars are available to vary the pleasures. Who says better!

6- Ceanothea


Here is another shrub that once well installed, will not require any watering. Its spectacular blue flowers in spring attract pollinating insects. Depending on the variety, the ceanothe can be used as ground cover, in a bed, or to hide a fence.

7- Buddleia


Easy to grow and requiring little water, the buddleia is adorned with its clusters of fragrant flowers throughout the summer. In hedges, clumps or alone, it attracts pollinating insects in all types of soil because it is not very demanding.

8- Escallonia


This South American shrub is little thought of, yet it has many qualities, including the fact that it blooms throughout the summer in a palette ranging from white to red, with all shades in between. In a seaside hedge or in a bed, the escallonia always makes its effect.

9- Oleander


Once well installed, the oleander takes care of itself with what nature offers and blooms from June to October if warmth and sun are present. Beware, the oleander is not very hardy.

10- Bougainvillea


This climbing shrub, if grown in the ground and installed for some time, does not need any water in summer. Its spectacular bracts illuminate the facades of the Mediterranean regions where the bougainvillea finds a favorable climate for its growth.
