10 blue flowers

Blue is a rather rare color in flowers that are usually dressed in more visible colors to attract pollinators. However, in the garden, blue is never a fault of taste in the decor - quite the contrary!

The myosotis

The myosotis blooms from March to June depending on the region. Its bouquets of blue flowers are a perfect accompaniment to spring bulbs in the garden. It appreciates rich, well-drained soil that stays cool and a sunny to semi-shady exposure.

The muscari

The muscari is one of the first bulbs to bloom announcing the spring with its spikes of blue flowers! Planted in groups, it always makes its effect at the foot of narcissus or tulips. Its small size (20 cm maximum) makes it an ideal subject for the edge of a bed or an alley.

Agapanthus

Agapanthus is a very graphic plant with high rounded flowering stems. Deciduous varieties like 'Nothern Star' or 'Tom Thumb' are frost resistant and have deep blue flowers in summer. Evergreen varieties should be reserved for well-sheltered gardens where frosts are rare.

Periwinkle

Periwinkle is ideal for ground cover in shady to semi-shady areas where the soil stays cool. Under a tree, on an embankment or at the foot of a hedge, its beautiful blue flowers appear in spring in a vast carpet. Be careful, it can become invasive!

Borage

Borage is a melliferous, medicinal and condiment plant that produces indigo blue star-shaped flowers from March to October. It appreciates well-drained, humus-rich soil and sunny locations. In the vegetable garden or orchard, it attracts pollinating insects.

The delphinium

The delphinium is an essential plant to decorate the backgrounds of massifs or the mixed-border. There are multiple cultivars that allow for staggered flowering from June to October. The dense spikes of flowers in all shades of blue are a delight to the eye.

The ipomea

The ipomea is a voluble climber with fast growth in fertile and fresh soil. This impressive plant is covered with deep blue flowers all summer long. It is ideal to cover a fence, an old tree or a wall quickly but it fears the cold.

Agastache

Agastache produces spikes of blue flowers all summer long. Undemanding as to the nature of the soil, hardy, it appreciates the full sun where its marked perfume is distilled. This aromatic and medicinal plant irresistibly attracts pollinating insects.

The viperine

The viperine is a spectacular plant, in particular with Echium candicans, which forms immense clumps with silvery foliage from which escape deep blue spikes in spring and summer. This plant is satisfied with most soils provided that they are well drained and not very fertile. Its numerous species with bluish spikes attract pollinating insects.

The aster

The aster takes over the blooming in autumn. It is available in multiple cultivars that can be used in the garden for all purposes: borders, beds, rock gardens and pots. Its blooming in small bluish daisies makes it the undisputed star of the fall.
